Alice Hamilton is known to us all as an American physician, leading expert in the field of  occupational health, and a pioneer in the field of industrial toxicology. She was also the first woman appointed to the faculty of  Harvard University.   In addition to her scientific work, Hamilton was a social-welfare reformer, humanitarian, peace activist, and a resident-volunteer at Hull House in Chicago. Her findings were scientifically persuasive and influenced sweeping health reforms that changed laws to improve the health of workers. However, did you know that Alice Hamilton lived the final years of her life in the Connecticut River Valley of Connecticut?  From her retirement in her 60s until her death at the age of 101 years, Dr. Hamilton resided at her home in Hadlyme, CT.  Our dinner meeting on June 18th will not only focus on the legacy that she left the world, but we will also explore her residency close by our roots in the Connecticut River Valley.

Two speakers will present.  The first will be Tina Carlson (7:00 – 7:45 pm) from the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame. The Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame is an educational outreach organization whose mission is to honor publicly the achievement of Connecticut women, preserve their stories, educate the public and inspire the continued achievements of women and girls. Following the main presentation, Kandie Carle - our second speaker, will present a brief talk about Alice Hamilton’s final residence at 8:15pm across the street from the residence.  Dr. Hamilton’s residence is a short drive from the Town Tavern and is located at 162 Ferry Road in Hadlyme.  For those interested, we will meet in the parking lot next to the Hadlyme ferry (across the street from 162 Ferry Road), for Ms. Carle’s presentation.  (Please note: 162 Ferry Road is a private residence so please do not congregate around the home.)  Ms. Carle is a lifetime member of the East Haddam Historical Society which was founded over 50 years ago.  She is also the Producing Artistic Director of the East Haddam Stage Company, in residence at Gillette Castle State Park. She has presented on the lives of the Hamilton family for the Rathbun Memorial Library, East Haddam.
